RENDERING THE REAL

The Project
Sireita Mullings is currently enrolled as an MPhil student at the Goldsmiths College University of London.  She has been funded by the ESRC to conduct collaborative research between Goldsmiths Sociology department and the 198 Contemporary arts and Learning. She began working as an arts practitioner in 2000 sharing her art and design skills with others to strengthen their advantage. In 2007 she opted to carry out an ethnographic study on the Impact of the Arts on Marginalised multiethnic youth in London. She explains;

Numerous arts projects have emerged throughout Britain and other parts of the world to combat marginalisation of young people. Although the notion of ‘marginalisation’ is riddled with complexities, the way it is understood and represented through the visual, is of great importance for understanding the sociology of ‘British youth’. This project interrogates the reflexive role of the visual for both the researcher and the participant. It will examine the application of the visual in characterising creative encounters with youth. Visual methods employed by young people participating on arts projects, that permit them to negotiate and articulate their own social constructs through a creative consciousness will also be explored.

Multiple methods will be used to document the experiences of those who have participated in creative projects. The experiences will render a sociological positioning amplified through the visual.
